Welcome! I’m Monae Johnson, your South Dakota Secretary of State since December 2022. With 8 years prior experience in the office and 2 years experience as your Secretary of State, I’ve built a strong foundation of leadership and service. As a lifelong South Dakotan, former small business owner, and proud mother and grandmother, I understand the challenges our communities face. I’m committed to ensuring election security, supporting small businesses, and making government more transparent and accessible for all South Dakotans.

Monae’s First-Term Accomplishments

  • Initiated upgrades to voter registration and business services platform.

  • Facilitated reciprocity for Pistol Permits with New Mexico (Enhanced) and Minnesota (Restricted Enhanced).

  • Reintroduced Economic Reports through partnership with Dakota Wesleyan University.

  • Held National leadership roles with National Association of Secretaries of State.

  • Advisory Council Member for DSU’s Local Government Cybersecurity Initiative.

  • Launched “Civics in the 605” social media education series.

  • Created the Gladys Pyle Award for young voters.

About Monae

A fourth-generation South Dakotan, Monae Johnson was born in Brookings, raised in Rapid City, and has called Pierre home. She’s a proud mother of six and grandmother of four. Monae brings a unique perspective as a former small business owner and an active community volunteer with organizations like Zonta Club of the Black Hills and her local church. Dedicated to her family, her faith, and her state, Monae is passionate about serving the people of South Dakota with energy and enthusiasm.
